Lower Secondary English – 1:1 Personalised Learning

Strengthen reading and writing, develop analytical skills and communicate with confidence in English.

Lower Secondary English – 1:1 Personalised Learning provides individual support for learners as they move beyond foundational English skills and begin developing the more sophisticated reading, writing, analytical and communication skills needed for secondary-level study.

Lessons are tailored to the learner’s current level, school curriculum, strengths and areas for development. Teaching can reinforce classroom learning, address gaps in understanding, provide additional challenge or help learners build confidence before progressing towards IGCSE-level English.

Learners may work with a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and other age-appropriate texts, developing their ability to understand increasingly complex material, identify important information, make inferences and explore how writers use language and structure to communicate meaning.

Writing develops alongside reading. Learners can practise creative, descriptive, narrative, persuasive, informative and analytical writing, with support in planning, organising and developing ideas. Attention is also given to vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling, grammar and punctuation so learners can communicate with increasing accuracy and sophistication.

What learners can develop

  1. Stronger reading comprehension and fluency
  2. Confidence engaging with increasingly challenging texts
  3. Ability to identify explicit and implicit meaning
  4. Greater understanding of writers’ language and structural choices
  5. Stronger analytical and critical-thinking skills
  6. More organised and developed written responses
  7. Greater confidence with creative and descriptive writing
  8. Experience with persuasive, informative and analytical writing
  9. Broader vocabulary and more precise word choice
  10. Stronger grammar, spelling and punctuation
  11. Improved speaking, listening and discussion skills
  12. Greater confidence explaining and supporting ideas
  13. Increasing independence as an English learner
  14. Strong foundations for progression towards IGCSE English

Lessons are delivered live online, 1:1 with an experienced teacher, allowing teaching to respond directly to the learner’s needs. Concepts can be explained carefully, written work reviewed in detail and feedback provided throughout the learning process.

Where appropriate, lessons can incorporate short stories, novels, poetry, non-fiction, articles, speeches and other engaging texts. Learners can be encouraged to discuss ideas, justify interpretations and use evidence from texts, helping bridge the transition from primary comprehension towards more analytical secondary English.

Teaching can complement the learner’s existing curriculum or provide a more personalised programme based on individual needs. As learners progress, lessons can gradually introduce the analytical reading, extended writing and independent thinking skills that will support later IGCSE English Language and Literature study.
