IGCSE English Literature – 1:1 Personalised Learning

Explore powerful texts, develop insightful analysis and build the confidence to succeed in IGCSE English Literature.

IGCSE English Literature – 1:1 Personalised Learning provides focused, individual support for learners studying English Literature at IGCSE or International GCSE. Lessons are tailored to the learner’s examination specification, set texts, current level, strengths and areas for development, helping them become more confident readers, develop insightful interpretations and construct strong literary essays.

Teaching can complement school learning, provide additional support with challenging texts, strengthen analytical writing or offer structured revision and examination preparation. Because lessons are personalised, teaching can focus closely on the specific novels, plays, poetry or other texts the learner is studying.

Learners develop the ability to explore themes, characters, relationships, language, structure and form, considering how writers create meaning and shape readers’ responses. They are encouraged to move beyond retelling the text and develop thoughtful, independent interpretations supported by carefully selected evidence.

Lessons can also explore relevant literary, historical and social contexts where these contribute to understanding the text. Rather than treating context as separate information to memorise, learners are supported in making meaningful connections between a text, its ideas and the circumstances in which it was written or received.

A strong emphasis is placed on literary essay writing. Learners can develop strategies for interpreting questions, planning responses, constructing arguments, integrating quotations and analysing evidence in depth.

Lessons are delivered live online, 1:1 with an experienced teacher, creating space for discussion as well as written practice. Learners can explore different interpretations, test their ideas through conversation and receive detailed feedback on analytical writing and examination responses.

Where appropriate, lessons can incorporate close reading, annotation, quotation analysis, essay planning, model responses, comparative activities, timed writing, exam-style questions and past-paper practice.

As examinations approach, teaching can become increasingly focused on revision of set texts, key quotations and ideas, essay planning, timed responses and examination technique, while continuing to prioritise genuine understanding over memorised answers.

Teaching can be adapted to the learner’s specific IGCSE or International GCSE English Literature specification and prescribed texts, where appropriate, as texts and assessment requirements vary between awarding bodies.
